The Hopping Mad Web Design Process

When Hopping Mad is contacted by a company or business to design a website for them, there is a process which we follow. We look at their market, what their business is trying to say, and create, in a collaborative manner, a web design solution that clearly articulates to the targeted audience the business’s message. Although the website design process is slightly modified for each Web project, we have found that overall we move through a very similar process for almost every client.

Consequently, we have over the years developed a fairly detailed website design and development process. For many clients web design and web development is a mysterious process. If it is their first time, they’re often completely unaware of major aspects of the process, such as the graphic design versus the web development. All they understand is that they provide their requirements, suggestions, and content, and sometime later a website appears. We feel our prospective clients will have a better understanding of everyone’s role in the process by understanding the steps which are involved in creating a successful website. Communication is important throughout this whole process so any miscommunication or confusion can be quickly addressed. Once we have had a discussion with the client to understand what their goals are, who the target audience is, detailed feature requests, and as much other relevant information, HMD can then proceed with

“The Hopping Mad Web Design Process”

1. Approval of the quote
2. Confirmation of the creative brief/Wireframe
3. Site content to be provided
4. Design process commences
5. Design development
6. Design approval
7. Construction
8. Test site
9. Site goes live

1. Approval of the quote
A full detailed quote outlining the web design project and project scope based on the brief provided will be emailed to the client for review. If there are any variations or additional items not mentioned or quoted for, please notify us so we can amend accordingly.
A signed quote and deposit is required before the project will commence.

2. Confirmation of the creative brief/wireframe
Once the quote has been accepted and the deposit paid, the designer allocated to the project will confirm with you the creative brief and project scope, and will prepare and send a series of wireframes outlining:
• The structural layout of each page
• The position of functional elements

Wireframes are sketches to lay out the website’s chunks of information and functionality for each page on the site. Wireframes include the containers for all the major elements of the page which include navigation, images, content, and functional elements like “search” and footers.

This is the time to lock in the site’s functionality and structure. The final wireframe is the agreed guideline we will use to design and then construct your site. Before the design process canl begin, the final wireframe needs to be approved. Any alterations or changes to the wireframe after approval may incur additional cost if it affects the design or programming already under way, or changes the scope of the document.
At this stage we will require the hosting details for the site. Hopping Mad Designs can organise hosting if required. Ecommerce sites allow consumers to electronically exchange goods and services with no barriers of time or distance. If the client wants an ecommerce site, banking/egateway accounts need to be established with the appropriate security measures put in place by the web programmers.

3. Site content to be provided
Text and images need to be provided to HMD before the design phase commences.
If the content is not yet completed or finalised, we at least need a very clear overview of what this content will be. This includes page headings, graphics/ images and the text that will appear on the website. If not supplied before the design stage and the final content deviates from what has been initial discussed, this may incur additional costs.

4. Design process commences.
HMD designer researches market and competitors and begins design concepts. The design process takes approx 5-7 working days unless otherwise discussed. Initial concepts for the Home page and 1 x internal page template will be presented to the client (either in a face to face meeting or via email)

5. Design development
The client provides design feedback. There are two rounds of design changes allowed for at this stage. Design amends must be provided in a collated format in one go. If HMD misunderstands or misinterprets an amend, we do not count that as a round of changes. If the designs are off brief – HMD will discuss the reason why with the client and if agreed, work on new concept.
Once the home page and internal page style are approved, the graphic designer will layout/design any additional layout or style items if the website is a CMS site such as the buttons, banners, or slideshows. If site is not a CMS, the full site will be laid out for approval. One round of design amends is allowed for at this stage to fully laid out site.

6. Design approval
With the final designs HMD will email you a design approval form to be signed and returned to HMD before construction will begin.

Any additional design changes after this stage will be considered additional and need to be discussed and quoted for separately.

7. Construction
During this phase, the approved interface designs are converted into compliant HTML. Timings will be advised, but a minimum of 2 weeks is required.

8. Test site
Hopping Mad Designs will deploy the website on a production server for testing, de-bugging, and review. This is when we make sure everything is in working order and that nothing has been missed either visually or functionally. We cross check the site on a number of browsers such as Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome, Safari, Opera, iPhone, BlackBerry, etc. At this point the client will have access and training to enter content (text, images and product information etc).

9. Site goes live
Once the client has reviewed the site and approved it, it is posted live. The new website only goes live with a formal client approval. HMD will submit the site to Google and if SEO is being provided, commences campaign.

We are responsive, agreeable, friendly, and approachable. Not only is Hopping Mad fast with its design and turn around times, but also extremely creative in everything we set our minds to do. We love what we do and enjoy the challenges presented to us each time a client approaches us with a web design request.

The planning and creation of websites is known as Web Design. Web Design is one of those fields that require a sound knowledge about the way to put forward a client’s views on the Internet in a visually compelling manner for a targeted audience. Thorough web design is not a simple task that just any designer can do. It requires a working knowledge of the many different components. Consequently, the execution of web design may actually encompass a team that has expertise in many different areas of including graphic design, branding, marketing, usability, programming, copywriting, and search engine optimization (SEO). The Hopping Mad Design team is made up of such specialists.
Obviously, graphic design is a key part of web design. Graphic design includes both design principles for page layouts such as balance, contrast, space, and unity and design elements such as lines, shapes, texture, fonts, color, and the use of images. These basics are part of the arsenal of an experienced graphic artist. The visual aspects plus the content or copy creation of web design is known as building the front-end of a web page or site. It is these two main components of web design that will impact visitors to the site. Distinctive looking websites are the result of successful web design. Clients want a site that is engaging and is easily navigable with clear, relevant information for their visitors.

what we do for you

Hopping Mad Designs has been at the forefront of web design for the past 14 years. We partner with businesses and companies, both large and small, from the ground up by delivering well thought out web designs that reflect each business’s personality, uniqueness, and needs. We never offer template design. What we do offer is a customized web design that will push boundaries and elevate a business’s visibility on the web. Basically, we care what you look like online and want to deliver a web design solution that sets you apart from your competition. We look at your market, what you are trying to say, and create, in a collaborative manner, a web design solution that clearly articulates through clever design and extraordinary branding your products or services to your target audience.

In addition to the visual presentation of web design, there are other technical aspects of web design and website development that are key components to the overall success of the site. Without the expertise of smart web programmers, a graphic designer’s work would never be realized or seen on the Internet. With the need for integrating social media into a website, along with the development of mobile apps and interactive mobile apps for iPhones, iPads and Androids, web design teams need to be on top of all their client’s complex requirements and high expectations. Since web design has the potential to be one of the most important means to sustain communication today, it is vital for businesses to work with a knowledgeable team.

Google is looking very closely now at the way that you integrate your website design with your SEO strategy.

Gone are the days where massive back linking campaigns would see your rankings rise online. SEO was built on this method and some SEO companies still practice this. The reality is that too many back links can do your site harm. Never ever agree to work with an SEO company that will promise to get you to page one of Google within 1-2 months through a large back linking campaign. Sure you may rise up quickly through the rankings, but it is only a matter of time before you are found out by the algorithm and then your website will incur a penalty. If this happens to your site it will be a long and very hard process not to mention expensive before you are released from the penalty. This could take many many months.

The trick is to look at the bigger picture when it comes to your website and search engine strategy. Make sure design, site architecture, content , and SEO are all planned from the very beginning. This will give you and your business the best possible outcome. Don’t rush in for the cheapest design and SEO option as you will most likely end up in hot water. Do your homework and always go with an experienced, seasoned web studio that has a great design and SEO track record. Most reputable companies are more than happy to sit down and go over a full web strategy with you. If they dont then give them a wide berth.

When choosing a company for your next web design project don’t make these mistakes:

1) Choose a company because they can offer you a better deal.

Sure, you might save money now – but you have to ask yourself what corners are they cutting to get the cost down for you.

2) Be certain that the web company has a strong and varied portfolio of work. Take a good hard look at their online portfolio and compare them. Often web design companies will provide templates for you and pass these off as customised design. This does not help your business as you really want to try to have a unique look and feel.

3) Is the web company offering you strategic advice, or are they just trying to make a quick sale? Are they taking the time to listen to what you are after and provide you with a complete design solution, ground up from the identity through to the website including your online marketing? If they cannot offer you this then you will end up in trouble later on down the track.
